The Readyfield Bloodhounds was formed in 1980 by the late Peter Boddy and his son David. The hounds are kenneled at The South Notts Hunt. The pack consists of approximately 25 couple of hounds, which are split 50/50 dogs and bitches.
We hunt the "clean boot", which means that no artificial scent is used and enables us to make an effective use of the variety of terrain available.
We meet once a week at 12.30 pm, from mid-October until the beginning of April. Traditionally both the opening meet and the last meet of the season are held at Readyfield Farm.
The hunt stretches around a 50 mile radius of Newark, which takes us throughout Nottinghamshire as well as Leicestershire, Derbyshire and parts of Lincolnshire. All this is possible down to the generosity of the farmers and landowners of the land we cross.
A days hunting is split into two lines, with a well deserved break in between. We can cover some where in the region of 10 - 15 miles and can jump upwards of 50 fences. Although the probable route and available jumps are prepared in the week preceeding, the field are unaware of the exact route which will be taken. However, we do have two field Masters. Julie Roark leads the field and takes the direct route and gives us all a great lead over the fences. Fred Hibbett, our senior Master stays towards the back of the field to give confidence to the less experienced. Fred is well renowned for getting anyone round where there is a desire to achieve!
Our days in Leicestershire are for those who want guaranteed jumping over some of the finest grassland and hedges in the county. Graham Smith, who is extremely familiar with the area, leads the field and Fred is on hand to show an alternative route.
Childrens meets are held regularly, mainly in the school holidays, and can also serve as a good introduction for adults. These days follow the same theme as other days but the lines are split into 3 or 4.
The host of the meet quite often invite us back at the end of the day for some food and drink, so we can reflect on the days hunting and welcome that all important cup of tea!
